Democracy: An Economical Morality

The Christian will face several issuesfrench revolution within his lifetime. The Christian first encounters the transcendent issue; God and the sinner’s condemnation. After Christians respond to the gospel call (the effectual calling) the renewing of the mind takes place in the saint’s life. This consists of personal sanctification, thirst for God’s Word, and the study of theology. However, one area that has been abandoned in our American society today is government. The majority of American Christians have mixed and matched the government of institutions so much that there is no longer an objective standard for what is objectively right or wrong, moral or immoral, good or evil.

In our time (2013) civil government has become a threat and enemy to God by cause of stepping over boundaries, taking away the rights of men (essentially playing the role of God), and standing against God’s people and the role of the church in history (a short list of many causes) so stockpair review . This curse is due to Christian abandoning a biblical worldview and giving over civil government (a God-made institution) to the enemies of God, as if it were an invitation for persecution and suffering. Take one look at the common denominator of Christian persecution and you will see an ungodly civil government. Just as Paul said that government was “God’s servant for your good.” (Romans 13:4), so we must see that persecution does not imply that the world is getting worse, rather that Christians are not being salt and light in all areas of their life (Matthew 5:13,14).

Very few Christians have ambassadors to civil government. The church has reduced the role of the ambassador to evangelism towards lost sinners, without a plea for civil implications. We not only send ambassadors to plea for the sinner to repent from their sins and believe the good news, but also for the civil magistrate to stop harming God’s people, just as Christ did with Saul (Acts 9:4-5, 1 Timothy 2:1-4). God desires for all men to be Christians; “for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” (1 Timothy 2:2). The gospel touches all of life, as it is a comprehensive and complete worldview. The Christian worldview must dictate what the role of civil government is.

In the current America, the typical church see’s civil government as a mix of democracy and God. The People decide particular laws, while (by some means) society is maintained and everyone is happy (at least that’s what is assumed). However, the issue of objective morality is obviously ignored when democracy is the method to the madness. If power is given to The People to dictate what is moral and immoral, then morality fluctuates with the market. If there is a demand from The People to legalize same sex marriage, then the supply will come from The People to fulfill that demand. It is a system that allows evil men to legalize their sins, leaving an inheritance of a wicked standard to it’s next generation by means of legal obligation.

When God began to create a people for Himself, he gave them laws for how to govern themselves. He gave those laws to protect those that follow His law and are righteous in the eyes of men (Romans 13:3, 1 Timothy 1:9). Most Christians will affirm this, but will in the next sentence say, “That was for Israel though.”, as if God has two separate standards, and that the first somehow does not apply to the church. “The Church” is God’s people attached to the same tree that the Jewish people were attached to. God does not give His people the power and ability to decide what morality was. God imposes the moral standard on all men, because He demands obedience to Him, the Creator and Rightful Owner of all things, and promises punishment and suffering for the disobedient, in history and in eternity. Morality is not an economic asset that has a fluctuating value. God’s law will always be in need for a society, for the society that rejects it will welcome destruction.

Morality is not something to be voted on. Morality is not based on economics. Civil laws may fluctuate, but laws do not make them moral. God decides morality, not man. God demands civil government to follow His law, not the opinion of His creation.

  • From what you say, I gather that not being salt and light is the primary cause for persecution? That’s the impression I receive.

    • In the context of a society that was once predominantly Christian, absolutely. When Christians give up and allow the enemy to take control and dominion over the land, then persecution will naturally come. it may not be immediate, since it’s progressive, but it will occur if Christians continue to allow it. The light shines onto the darkness, revealing it’s works and thus, drives it away.

The same concept can be applied to a gospel-less part of the world. When Christian enter that part, persecution occurs because the initial conflict between light and dark is much more potent. Light eventually overcomes, which is why Jesus said that He has already overcome the world, and therefore the Great Commission is an outworking of what Christ accomplished, while the Spirit uses Christians to accomplish that.
